Chief of Police

A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Chief Philip L. Gonshak began his law enforcement career at the Tempe, Arizona Police Department in 2000 before joining the Seal Beach Police Department in 2007. Since joining Seal Beach, he has served as a Police Officer, Corporal, Sergeant, and Commander where he has had a variety of assignments in patrol, field training, special investigation, narcotics, and SWAT operator and sniper. Additionally, he served as the West County SWAT Commander prior to his promotion, a regional team that serves the cities of Seal Beach, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Los Alamitos, and Westminster.

Chief Gonshak has a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, a POST Management Certificate, and a master’s degree in Public Administration, all from California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), go Beach! He is a graduate of the Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute’s Class #384, the Los Angeles Police Department’s West Point Leadership Program, and the FBI National Academy Class #260. Furthermore, Chief Gonshak currently serves as an adjunct professor teaching public administration courses at his alma mater, CSULB.

Chief Gonshak has three daughters, two grandchildren, and has been married to his wife for 16 years. He spends his free time with his family and building, manufacturing, or welding an off-road vehicle in his home garage.

Command Staff

Captain Michael Henderson

Captain Henderson has over 30 years of law enforcement experience, having come to the Seal Beach Police Department from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2006.  During his time at Seal Beach PD, Capt. Henderson has worked a variety of assignments, including Patrol Sergeant, Corporal, SWAT team member, Explorer Advisor, Emergency Services Coordinator, Public Information Officer and Homeless Liaison Officer.  

 

Captain Henderson has a Bachelor’s Degree from Cal State Long Beach and a Master’s Degree in Homeland Security Studies.  He is also a graduate of the POST Executive Development Course, and the Executive Leadership Institute at Drucker.  He has twice received the Department’s Life-Saving Medal.

 

 

 

Captain Mike Ezroj

Michael Ezroj has been in the law enforcement field for 23 years. He has been employed with the City of Seal Beach for 16 years. In that time he has held the following assignments: FTO, Explorer Advisor, West County SWAT team member, Traffic Supervisor, Parking Supervisor, Emergency Services Coordinator, Patrol Sergeant, Support Services Captain and currently Operations Captain.

 

In his spare time Michael like to spend time with family and friends. He is an avid runner and can be found running around the area in his free time.

 

 

 

Lieutenant Nick Nicholas

Lieutenant Nick Nicholas is currently assigned as the Operations Bureau Lieutenant and Public Information Officer. Prior to his current assignment, Lieutenant Nicholas was the Department’s Narcotics Detective. Lieutenant Nicholas also worked as a patrol watch commander, field training officer, terrorism liaison officer, explorer post advisor, homeless liaison officer, and beach/bike patrol officer. He is recognized by the International Association of Chiefs of Police as a Drug Recognition Expert and is a licensed Emergency Medical Technician. Lieutenant Nicholas was the recipient of the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Century Award for arresting 113 impaired drivers in one calendar year. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration and a Master’s Degree in Political Science. 

Lt. Nicholas is also the Department’s Police Facility Dog Handler and works every day with his partner K-9 Yosa.  Yosa is used to provide comfort to witnesses and victims of crime, children during forensic interviews, and community members exposed to trauma.  Nick and Yosa also attend several community and special events to help strengthen the relationship between the community and Police Department.

 

 

Lieutenant Julia Clasby

Lt. Julia Clasby has been a police officer for 12 years and joined the Seal Beach Police Department in 2014. She has worked various assignments including patrol, field training officer, bike patrol, explorer advisor, emergency services coordinator, honor guard, and investigations. Lt. Clasby currently serves as the Support Services Bureau Lieutenant. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Management Economics and a master’s degree in Emergency Services Administration. Lt. Clasby is a die-hard Laker fan who loves cycling and going to country music concerts. When not at work, she spends every waking moment with her family.
