Summary
The Seal Beach Police Department runs a class called the Community Policing Academy. It is for members of the public, not training for a career in law enforcement. The class meets one evening a week for ten weeks, on Wednesdays from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Police Department at 911 Seal Beach Boulevard. Over the ten weeks you learn how the Department is organized, what different officers do, how detectives investigate crimes, how patrol and traffic stops work, and how officers are trained in use of force and firearms. There are hands-on activities, a visit to the shooting range, CPR certification, and a chance to ride along with an officer on patrol. The tenth week is a graduation ceremony with a certificate. Only 20 people can join each academy. To apply you must be at least 18 years old, live or work in Seal Beach, and have no misdemeanor or felony convictions. You complete an application and a personal history statement, and the Department runs a criminal background check.
